Pairing chocolate with popcorn may seem a little out there, but this twist on the classic movie-night treat is sure to blow your mind. For a little added magic, try using an infused chocolate instead of regular chips...you'll thank us later.
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup unpopped popcorn kernels (don't have loose kernels, that's okay just use a microwave bag!)
- 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips (or a bag of hive & mind chocolates)
- 1/2 tablespoon coconut oil
- flaky sea salt, to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
Chocolate Popcorn Instructions
Step 1: Pop the Popcorn
Start by popping your popcorn kernels. There are a variety of methods to do this whether it is in the microwave or on the stovetop, just make to your preference! Once kernels are popped, remove the popcorn from heat and put aside in a large mixing bowl.
Step 2: Melt the Chocolate
Begin making your melted chocolate mixture. Place a heatproof bowl over a pot of simmering water, creating a double boiler. Then, add the chocolate & coconut oil into the bowl, stirring consistently until smooth. Once the chocolate is fully melted, remove from heat, add the vanilla extract, & stir.
Step 3: Coat the Popcorn
Then, take the melted chocolate mixture and slowly pour it over the popcorn, gently mixing it as you add. It is important during this step to add the chocolate slowly and mix gently to avoid crushing the popcorn. If you prefer a thinner layer of chocolate, feel free to reserve some melted chocolate for drizzling later.
Step 4: Season the Popcorn
Now for the finale, sprinkle some flaky sea sale over the coated popcorn while it is still warm and gently mix. If you want to get creative during this step, go for it! (Maybe adding a little cinnamon or chili powder for some extra flavor)
Step 5: Let Set & Enjoy! (Optional)
Depending on your popcorn preferences, you can enjoy this treat right when it's warm, or let it set for later! To set the chocolate: spread the popcorn onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Allow it to cool on the counter or in the fridge for 30-60 minutes. Enjoy!
Storing Chocolate Popcorn
Once the popcorn has set and hardened, store it in an airtight container. It should stay fresh for up to a week (if it lasts that long!).
